The Kimberley is where remote starts to mean something real. Broome, Derby, Kununurra and Halls Creek are a long way from Perth, and many project sites are a long way from those towns again. Distances, weather, permits, fuel and local relationships matter as much as the equipment rate.
Distance changes everything
Broome is roughly 2,200 kilometres from Perth by road. Kununurra is further again by practical freight route. Mobilising plant from the south can take days and cost serious money. Local suppliers may have limited fleet depth, but their knowledge of roads, communities, fuel points and wet season access is valuable.
The wet season
Wet season planning is the Kimberley issue. Roads can close, river crossings can become impassable and some communities or stations may be isolated. In bad years, access disruptions can stretch well beyond what a city programme allows. Dry season is the main construction window, which means equipment availability tightens quickly.
Town-by-town considerations
Broome has the broadest service base and supports construction, tourism, civil and regional works. Derby is important for west Kimberley access. Kununurra supports agriculture, civil, mining support and east Kimberley projects. Halls Creek is more limited, so planning and backup options become more important.
Permits and land access
Some work involves Aboriginal land, pastoral leases, conservation areas or restricted access roads. Equipment mobilisation may require permits, consultation and careful timing. Do not assume you can send a float wherever the map shows a track. Ask early and respect local requirements.
Equipment selection
Choose robust gear that can handle corrugations, heat, dust and isolation. Generators, pumps, light towers, toilets, fencing and earthmoving plant all need service support. For wet hire, operator accommodation and fatigue management must be planned. A breakdown outside town can become a full logistics exercise.
Practical advice
- Book dry season work early.
- Confirm the supplier has actually serviced your location before.
- Ask about fuel, spares and after-hours support.
- Build weather delay and standby terms into the quote.
The Kimberley rewards preparation. A fair dinkum plan beats a cheap quote every time.
